Another Singapore shipyard becomes a new infection group after 7 diagnosed COVID-19!

Following Keppel Shipyard, Sembawang Shipyard, another subsidiary of Singapore's offshore engineering builder Sembcorp Marine, has also become a new coronavirus infection group, and 7 people have been diagnosed COVID-19.

According to the data disclosed by the Ministry of Health in Singapore, on April 19, five new infection groups were added in Singapore, including guesthouses Woodlands Lodge I (from 12) and Changi Lodge II (from 21), and Paya Umi Industrial Park No. 51 (From 17), Jalan Besut No. 17 (from 7) and Sembcorp Marine subsidiary Shengbaowang Shipyard (from 7).

In order to reduce the risk of the spread of the new coronavirus, Sembcorp Marine has decided to shut down for two weeks from April 17. This also resulted in the hull of Energean Power, the latest floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) of the Greek oil company Energean, unable to start the upper module installation and other follow-up work after arriving at Semir Admiralty Yard.

Previously, Keppel Shipyard, a subsidiary of Keppel Offshore and Marine, was confirmed as a new infection group by the Ministry of Health in Singapore on April 2 and was related to three confirmed cases of unknown origin. According to data released by the Singapore Ministry of Health on April 10, the number of confirmed cases at Keppel Shipyard reached 21 people.

Among the 596 newly confirmed cases on April 19, 544 were work permit holders living in guest dormitories, 22 were work permit holders living outside dormitories, and another 30 Cases are community cases. 68% of the new cases are related to known infections, and others need to be further tracked.

Foreign workers in guest dormitory have become a new source of infection in Singapore, and the infection rate is 40 times higher than other communities. According to data released by the Ministry of Health in Singapore, as many as 323,000 guest workers live in guest dormitory, including 200,000 guest workers and factory personnel who live in 43 guest dormitory for the whole island of Singapore

In order to respond urgently to this situation, Singapore has set up an inter-departmental working group to disperse these foreign workers into military camps, unused schools, floating dormitories on the sea, empty residential buildings on the ground floor and multi-storey car parks. Singapore also urgently called two floating accommodation vessels to accommodate healthy foreign workers, and considered using two cruise ships to accommodate cured foreign workers after discharge.
